Family Education

Tutors teach English as a Second Language (ESL), Citizenship, GED, and basic literacy classes. Tutors can also help in classes to provide more personalized attention to each student or work one-on-one with students outside the classroom setting. Catholic Charities will provide training or refer volunteers to off-site ESL and/or Basic Literacy training.

Childcare Assistants assist Catholic Charities staff in the childcare center. Tasks include nurturing the children and creating a safe and comforting environment.

Senior Support Services

Transportation Volunteers drive the elderly to doctor's appointments, Transportation Volunteersthe bank, or the grocery store. Catholic Charities receives over 40 requests a week from seniors who need assistance, and the only way Catholic Charities can accommodate them all is with help from volunteers. Volunteers can request the days, times, as well as the areas in which they would like to drive.

Friendly Visit Volunteers visit an elderly person at their home. Spending time with a homebound elderly can really brighten up their day. Volunteers can request the days, times, as well as the areas in which they would like to visit.

Respite Care Volunteers provide companionship and safety for a frail older adult so that the elder's primary caregiver may take a break. Volunteers can request the days, times, as well as the areas in which they would like to visit.

Refugee Resettlement

Refugee Case Manager Aides shadow and assist case managers during their daily activities. Some tasks would include driving clients to appointments, distributing donations, and greeting refugee families at the airport.

Family Partnership Volunteers are volunteer families, school groups, and parish partners who are paired with an incoming refugee family. These volunteers will meet the refugees at the airport as a welcoming committee, set-up their apartment, host their first meal, and then acclimate the refugees into New Mexico society. Volunteers work closely with the case manager of each refugee family.

Refugee Student Services Tutors provide one-on-one tutoring for middle and high school students including homework help, journaling activities, and mentorship.

In-School Mentors provide in-school, one-on-one tutoring and assistance for refugee students in middle and high school, and provide support to classroom teachers of refugee students.

Counseling

Counseling Interns work as mental health specialists assisting in activities developed and/or coordinated by the Counseling Program.

Childcare Providers create warm and safe spaces for the children of Behavioral Health clients while counseling activities are in session.

Immigration

Immigration Interns and Volunteers greet clients in the lobby, manage office upkeep, and take photos of clients. Bilingual (English/Spanish) capability is a plus.

Immigration Translators translate individual case documents from Spanish to English and English to Spanish. Volunteers must have bilingual written skills and computer literacy.

Administrative Support

Office Aides maintain general office upkeep. Some tasks may include working on mailings, filing, copying, sorting donations, and greeting clients. Hours and times are flexible.

Community Outreach

Donation Pickup and Delivery Drivers pick-up and distribute donations, supplies, and other items for our clients. Catholic Charities will provide transportation.

Special Projects can be arranged by any individual, youth groups, church or parish, school group, or anyone else interested in serving our community by contacting Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities is also willing to arrange one-day projects for any groups or individuals. Volunteers are especially needed for the special projects during the holiday season. Please contact us before Thanksgiving and Christmas to get involved and to help our neighbors.
