Catholic Charities Needs Volunteers

Volunteer Opportunities

Governor’s Non-Profit Volunteer of the Year

“I always remember the song by Neil Diamond, ‘Coming to America.’ The stories of the immigrant and refugee populations I work with are amazing: their ‘adventures’ in coming to America . I have everything; they leave everything (sic) they have ever known, behind.”
- Tom Fisher, March ’06.

On Friday, April 21. Tom Fisher was honored as Governor Richardson’s Non-Profit Volunteer of the Year for his work at Catholic Charities. Tom approached Catholic Charities less than a year ago. He wanted to “pay back some” for the help he had received in his life. He had tutored in math and science throughout his college career and had always thought there might be a GED student who could use his help. Tom has not, as yet, used his math or science skills with our students but, he has been introduced to a whole new world: tutoring in English as a Second Language.

Finalist for Catholic Charities USA Volunteer of the Year

Recently, our own Pete Robinson was honored by being selected as one of 12 finalists for the Catholic Charities USA Volunteer of the year. One of Pete’s many former tutoring students gratefully recalls the two plus years that Pete worked with her in his role as a volunteer for Catholic Charities. As a Cuban refugee who spoke no English, she found Pete to be “a wonderful teacher, very patient. He was there every week, at the same time, for our meetings. He was very committed to his mission to help people.”

What is a Volunteer?
Definition of a Volunteer

Volunteers are crucial to Catholic Charities and the success of its programs. A volunteer is anyone who provides his or her time and services for free. Volunteers have a unique role as representatives of the community and advocates of the agency, as well as providing valuable services to complement staff and agency efforts.

Volunteers provide services that strengthen and touch the lives of over 11,000 people annually. Last year volunteers provided over 17,000 hours of service at Catholic Charities. We offer opportunities to serve our community in various programs including:

  • Teen Parent Support in Santa Fe
  • Senior Support Services
  • Refugee Resettlement
  • Immigration
  • Family Education
  • Special Projects
  • Administrative support

Volunteers may fill any volunteer position for which they are qualified and interested. Each volunteer position has a job description to guide a volunteer in his or her duties. To read about specific volunteer job descriptions, click here.

Volunteers are encouraged to promote the agency, its activities, and the needs of its clients. There are many ways to participate - please join us! Interested persons should fill out a Volunteer Profile form. We will review your references, complete a criminal background check, and call you for an orientation.

Non-Discrimination Policy

Catholic Charities does not discriminate in the recruitment, training, placement, performance evaluation, and termination of volunteers based upon race, ancestry, color, religion, creed, age, physical or mental disability, veteran status, national origin, sex, or sexual orientation.
