Beginning I ESL
Provides the foundation for students with little or no previous experience with English. Introduces the student to basic vocabulary and grammar with an emphasis on listening comprehension and the creation of simple sentences focused on real-life contexts.
4 hrs/wk for 3 consecutive terms
Beginning II ESL
Reviews and expands on previous materials and skills of the Beginning I course. Introduces new grammatical structures and materials with an emphasis on responding to oral and written communication relevant to daily life.
4 hrs/wk for 3 consecutive terms
Intermediate I ESL
Reviews and expands on previous materials of the Beginning II course. Introduces new materials that require more complex usage and more advanced critical and creative thinking skills. Focuses on the conventions of oral and written English with practice in communication skills for everyday life.
4 hrs/wk for 3 consecutive terms
ESL/Citizenship
For speakers of English (Beginning II or higher) who are preparing for the U.S. citizenship exam and interview. Includes English language skills, U.S. history and issues of local, state and federal government.
4 hrs/wk for 12 weeks - Class may be repeated until test is passed.
Beginning ESL/Computer
For speakers of English (Beginning II or higher) who have little or no previous computer experience. Computers are used as a tool to integrate reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to learn English. Meaning-based and student-centered, the course is a flexible approach that encourages students to focus on grammar within the context of their own real life experiences.
4 hrs/wk for 3 consecutive terms
Basic ESL & Work Skills - For Refugees
Provides the foundations for students with little or no previous experience with English. Introduces the student to basic vocabulary and grammar with an emphasis on listening comprehension and the creation of simple sentences focused on real-life contexts. Includes responding to oral and written communication in the workplace. Assists students with completing a job application. The computer component includes basic computer skills and vocabulary.
16 hrs/wk for 5 weeks - open entry
English GED
For those whose first language is English or who have achieved an advanced level of ESL. This is not an English language class but rather a class to help students prepare for the GED exam, in order to obtain a high school diploma. The primary focus is on the core skills of reading comprehension, math, and writing. Whole-class lessons and activities are combined with individual study supported by teacher assistance. In this way, students have the opportunity to work at their own level. Each student, in consultation with the teacher, can determine how long they need to study before taking the GED test.
4 hrs/wk for 3 consecutive terms
Spanish GED
For those whose native language is Spanish. This is not an ESL course but rather is to prepare the student for the GED exam in Spanish, in order to obtain a high school diploma. Each of the five subject areas is covered (Social Studies, Math, Language: Reading, Writing, and Science), with particular emphasis on written expression, reading comprehension, and math. Each student, in consultation with the teacher, can determine how long they need to study before taking the GED test.
