Telephone 247-0442, 232-3048, 232-2322The Employment Program assists low-income, unemployed, residents of Bernalillo County to locate employment. Currently, this is accomplished through the Welfare-to-Work program funded by the US Department of Labor. Catholic Charities of Central New Mexico is implementing a three-year grant for $1.3 million to serve 750 participants transition from welfare to work. These clients have multiple barriers to work including:
- Substance abuse
- Domestic violence
- Low literacy levels
- Lack of work experience
- Lack of transportation and childcare
Individuals receiving Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) from the New Mexico Human Service Department are eligible for a wide-range of services, including:
- Life skills classes to assist the participant prepare for the world of work
- Intensive one-on-one case management services
- Group or one-on-one counseling
- On-site childcare
- Adult basic education classes ranging from
- pre-GED (General Education Degree)
- GED
- literacy
- ESL (English as a Second Language)
- reading and mathematics
- Job preparedness training in
- job search
- resume writing
- interview skills
- managing conflict at work
- On-the-job training opportunities
- Computer training
- Job coaching and clubs
- Services for physically and developmentally disabled
- Mentoring opportunities to assist other adults overcome barriers to employment
